Opening Scripture | John 14:5-14 | Jesus the Way to the Creator

           5 Thomas said to him,

“Jesus, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

           6 Jesus answered,

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Creator except through me.

7 If you really know me, you will know the Creator as well.

From now on, you do know the Creator and have seen the Creator.”

           8 Philip said,

“Jesus, show us the Creator and that will be enough for us.”

           9 Jesus answered:

“Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Creator.

How can you say, ‘Show us the Creator’?

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Creator, and that the Creator is in me?

The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.

Rather, it is the Creator, living in me, who is doing this work.

                       11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Creator and the Creator is in me;

or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they

will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Creator.

13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Creator may be glorified in the Child.

14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

♫Song of Response | “The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want” | #578

Responsive Opening Prayer

ONE:   God, we know you, we hear your promises and yet we are sometimes uncertain.

ALL:    Guide us as we seek to recognize and acknowledge your goodness and purposes in ALL of creation.

ONE:   Challenge and provoke us to actively pursue your work; modeling our lives after that of your son Jesus.

ALL:    And if we stumble, are discouraged or hesitate; call us home for assurance and courage as we

lean into your everlasting arms, your constancy, your love, your blessedness, and your peace.

♫Offering Music | “My Life Flows On/How Can I Keep From Singing” | Gwyneth Walker
Worship Choir, Becky Snell, Director

My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentation.
I hear the real though distant song that hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing.
It sounds an echo in my soul, how can I keep from singing?

What though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth, it’s living!
What though the darkness round me close, songs in the night it’s giving!
No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that rock I’m clinging.
Since I believe that love abides, how can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble when they hear the bells of freedom ringing.
When friends rejoice both far and near, how can I keep from singing?
In prison cell, in dungeon dark, our thoughts to them are winging.
When friends hold courage in their heart, how can I keep from singing?

Scripture Focus | John 14:1-3 | Jesus Comforts the Disciples

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

2 The Creator’s house has many rooms;

if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you,

I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

♫Sending Song | “A Mother’s Love” | by Jim Brickman

Thank you for watching over me all of the sleepless nights you lay awake.

Thank you for knowing when to hold me close - when to let me go.

Thank you for every stepping-stone and for the path that always leads me home.

I thank you for the time you took to see the heart inside of me.

You gave me the roots to start this life and then you gave me wings to fly and I learned to dream

                       because you believed in me.

There's no power like it on this earth - no treasure equal to its worth - the gift of a mother's love.

Thank you for every sunlit day that filled the corners of my memory.

Thank you for every selfless unsung deed I know you did for me.

Thank you for giving me the choice to search my soul till I could find my voice.

And I thank you for teaching me to be strong enough to bend.

You gave me the roots to start this life and then you gave me wings to fly and I learned to dream

                       because you believed in me.

There's no power like it on this earth - no treasure equal to its worth - the gift of a mother's love.

           I thank God for a mother's love
