Opening Scripture | Matthew 21:1-11
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them,
“Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.
8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna (a Hebrew expression meaning SAVE) to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:25,26)
“Hosanna (a Hebrew expression meaning SAVE) in the highest heaven!”

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

♫Special Music | “Let the Life I’ve Lived” | Gwyneth Walker
Worship Choir

Let the life I’ve lived speak for me. Let the life I’ve lived speak for me.

When I come to the end of the road and I lay down my heavy load,

let the life I’ve lived speak for me.

Let the friends I’ve made speak for me. Let the friends I’ve made speak for me.

When I come to the end of the road and I lay down my heavy load,

let the friends I’ve made speak for me.

Lay down your burden and rest with the setting sun.

All the beauty of your life will shine when the day is done.

Let the love I’ve shared speak for me. Let the love I’ve shared speak for me.

           Let the love that I’ve tried to share and the burdens I’ve struggled to bear;

all this life of joy and care speak for me. Let the life I’ve lived speak for me.

Scripture Reading | Luke 19:41–23:24 (paraphrased)

19:41   … as he came near the city, he wept over it, saying,

19:42   “the things that make for peace are hidden from your eyes”

19:45   he entered the temple and drove out those selling things

19:46   “my house is a house of prayer – you have made it a den of robbers”

19:47   every day he was in the temple the:

chief priests, scribes & leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him

20:01   one day as he was teaching in the temple the:

chief priests, scribes and elders said to him,

“by what authority are you doing these things, who gave you this authority..”

20:19   the scribes and Chief priests wanted to lay hands on him that very hour

20:20   they watched him and sent spies in order to trap him

20:23   but he perceived their craftiness and

20:26   they were not able to trap him

21:08   he said, “beware that you are not led astray: for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he.’

The time is near! Do not go after them

21:12   … they will persecute you and you will be brought before Kings and Governors

21:13   because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify.

21:16   You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers,

21:17   by relatives and friends …You will be hated … because of my name

21:22   for these are days of vengeance ….

21:34   … be on guard … be alert at all times …

♫Scripture Song | “I want Jesus to Walk with Me”
Solo, verse one – Congregation, verses two and three

22:01   Now the festival of Unleavened Bread (Passover) was near.

22:08   Jesus said to Peter and John, “go and prepare the Passover meal for us.

22:10   …when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters and say,

22:11   ‘where is the guest room, where we may eat the Passover?’

22:12   he will show you a large room upstairs … make preparations there

22:14   … when the hour came he took his place at the table

22:17   he took a cup and after giving thanks he said, ‘take this and divide it among yourselves’

22:19   then he took a loaf of bread and when he had given thanks for it he broke it, gave it to them and said,

‘this is my body which is given for you - do this in remembrance of me - and he said the same about the cup’

♫Scripture Song | “Let us Break Bread Together” | #453

22:39   he got up … and went out to the Mt. of Olives,

22:41   he knelt down and prayed, ‘Creator God, if you are willing, remove

22:42   this cup from me and yet not my will – but Yours – be done’
